AN Ashton Keynes couple celebrated 60 years of happy marriage on Thursday which they say was only possible by not arguing.

Brian and Ena Saunders first met at the Foresters Arms in The Leigh after going to a dance in nearby Cricklade and it was love at first sight.

Brian, 81, said the secret to a long and successful marriage is to make sure you pick the right partner and always make an effort to get on well.

He said: “They should pick the right person and don’t have any rows.

“We do not argue. When we go out we do not argue.

“I was lucky enough to pick the person. A lot of people don’t but I have picked the right person.”

Ena, 76, agreed and said that "give and take" has helped their marriage last so long.

Most years, the two travel to Weymouth for caravan holidays and Brian said the two have had some of their happiest times there.

“We go in a caravan. We stop for a fortnight and then start saving for next year.”

The two, who have two daughters, one son and four grandchildren, used to mow the grass verges for Ashton Keynes parish council and several years ago they helped Ashton Keynes pick up the best kept village award.

Today they are planning to spend their anniversary by going out for a meal with their family.
