A POLICE officer sustained a broken tooth and a 43-year-old man was knocked out during assaults in the early hours of Saturday, June 13 in Cirencester.

At 1am police were alerted to an alleged assault in Castle Street, Cirencester where a 43 year old man from Cirencester who had been knocked unconscious in the street by a 20-year-old man near Stoneys restaurant.

As the man was being treated by an ambulance crew, a witness identified the 20-year-old and he was spotted on the town centre CCTV system.

He returned to Castle Street, the scene of the alleged assault, where he was spoken to by an officer, who he then  assaulted by grabbing him and knocking him to the ground.

With the help of other officers the man was arrested and taken into custody.

The victim of the original assault was taken by ambulance to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon where he received treatment for concussion and bruising.

As well as sustaining a broken tooth, the officer also suffered bruising to his face and hands.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed either assault or who has any further information.

  Chris Wright, sergeant of Cirencester Police Station, said: “During the incident a crowd gathered in the street and the actions of some of those present were questionable at best. Some of the crowd appeared to be egging on the young man who was arrested. We would like to speak to those people and appeal to other members of the public who were trying to enjoy a night out in Cirencester to help us identify them and provide any evidence that they can about the assaults.”
