SHEEP and cattle will fill the streets of Moreton-in-Marsh later this month as part of a celebration marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

The event on June 17 will see the town’s High Street transformed into a 19th century market complete with traditional stalls and activities.

The event is being organised by president of the Moreton Show David Glaisyer, who said he hoped it provide a link between the town’s businesses and the show, due to be held on September 5.

He added he also hoped it would help increase awareness of the historical importance of the town, which was a key market location in the 19th century due to location at the crossroads of the Fosseway and the Stratford to Moreton railway.

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, June 18 1815 near the small village of Waterloo in what is now Belgium but was then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The decisive clash saw Napoleon Bonaparte’s French forces defeated by an alliance of the Anglo-Allied army led by the Duke of Wellington and the Prussian army under Gebhard von Blucher, ending the French Emperor’s reign.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to help out at the event can contact Mr Glaisyer on 01608 650 601.
