MORE people have come forward to complain about the litter left in the Abbey Grounds in Cirencester.

Last week, a man contacted the Standard to complain about teenagers in Cirencester leaving rubbish lying all over the Abbey Grounds - he said he wants it to stop.

The elderly man, who asked not to be named, said he saw youngsters illegally drinking alcohol and sitting in the popular town park last week. He said they left all their rubbish there when they left.

"This is not the first time this has happened," he said. "It happens every weekend. I have complained to the council before but something needs to be done.

"It's a disgrace. They made no effort to clear it up. I think it's appalling. Poor old Cirencester."

After the Standard published the unnamed man's complaints, more people came forward to agree with his comments.

Alan Landor from Cirencester said there has been a problem for many years.

"I live in the Abbey Grounds and we see it every day," he said. "Once school summer holidays start it gets even worse so you know who the culprits are. They will even sit next to a litter bin and leave the rubbish behind.

"If kids are not taught to pick up litter at school or at home they will behave like that outdoors, it's some one else's job to pick up litter."

Another man, who also asked not to be named, said he walks his dog around the Abbey Grounds early in the morning and has to constantly watch out for broken bottles and discarded food and drink left from the night before.

"I too agree it is a disgrace, what is the point of having CCTV if nothing is ever done as they must be able to identify these culprits," he said. "Where too are the community officers when they are needed? Nowhere to be seen.

"We live in a wonderful town and we should all be able to enjoy it. The new bench carved out of a tree trunk is absolutely wonderful but sits within a park where the bandstand is constantly blighted with rubbish."
