A 38-year-old mother of three who drove at over 100 miles an hour through city streets trying to evade police has been jailed for nine months.

Angela Parker from Moreton-in-Marsh even managed to avoid a police 'stinger' used to try and puncture her car tyres, turning around and then mounting the pavement to avoid police cars which tried to block her escape.

She and her former partner, who was also in the car, managed to evade the police and then walked away after dumping the car.

But they were seen by a householder and picked up a few minutes later.

Jailing her, Recorder Simon Levene sitting at Gloucester Crown Court, said people could have been killed or seriously injured by her driving.

He went on: "You acted in total disregard for members of the public or the police. The only sentence that can be justified is one of immediate imprisonment."

Parker, of Lysander Way, Moreton, had admitted dangerous driving, driving without a licence and without insurance.

She also admitted possession of class A drugs, heroin and cocaine, but she denied three further charges of handling stolen goods and when the prosecution offered no evidence the Recorder entered not guilty verdicts.

Alexander West, outlining the facts of the drugs charge, said Parker had been stopped by police outside her father's home and when she was searched, six wraps of heroin and a small quantity of cocaine were found, together valued at £90. She said they were for her own use.

He said the dangerous driving occurred in Gloucester on the night of February 16 this year.

"A marked police car followed the defendant's car and put its blue lights on requiring her to stop," he said.

"But she drove away along Bristol Road reaching speeds of 100 miles an hour in the 30 mile an hour limit. A second police car joined in the chase and Miss Parker drove over a bridge at 70 miles an hour.

"Ahead of her along Bristol Road, other officers deployed a stinger device, but Parker saw it and stopped, turning her car round and mounting the kerb to get past blocking police cars."

She was seen to be the driver of the car at this stage and the pursuit continued, again reaching 100 miles an hour back into the city.

The police lost sight of the car but Mr West said a little later, a householder heard screeching tyres, and looking out, saw a car drive past.

He then he saw a man and a woman walk back from the same direction and contacted police.

Parker was found to have no valid licence or insurance, and the Recorder was told she had driven without insurance a number of times before, and had also been convicted of drink driving and driving while disqualified.

In mitigation, Joe Moloney asked the Recorder to be merciful to a woman who had three children and who had been influenced to drive as she had by her partner of the time, who was also in the car.

She had since parted from him he said, and realized the seriousness of what she had done.

"If she had been by herself in the car, it would not have happened," he said. "Although she has been involved in other matters previously, there has been nothing since 2009. This demonstrates a significant gap in her offending."

The nine month prison sentence included one month concurrent for the drugs offences, and Parker was ordered to take an extended driving test before she drives again.
