PEOPLE in Cirencester are told to be on high alert after a suspicious trader pretending to work for the government was seen offering surveys for older houses.

The Gloucestershire County Council Trading Standards Service sent a message out on their official Twitter account warning Cirencester residents about the conman.

Eddie Coventry, head of Trading Standards said: “Trading Standards urges home owners to take care when dealing with doorstep callers.

"There are reports of salesmen calling door to door in the Cotswolds claiming to be offering surveys and roof work on behalf of the government.

"This is not true and only being said to give the impression their business has official approval.

“Legitimate traders will understand if you take the time to shop around. They will be prepared to provide written quotations for any work and, when the work is agreed in your own home in conversation with the trader, they must give you written information about your right to cancel up to 14 days from when you agree for the work to take place."

If anyone has any concerns about traders calling door to door contact Trading Standards on 03454 04 05 06.
