COLD calling could become a thing of the past as the government seeks to allow fines of up to £500,000 for nuisance callers.
The move follows more than 175,000 complaints about cold calling and texting to the Commissioner’s Office.
Currently, firms can only be punished if the Information Commissioner (ICO) can prove a call caused "substantial damage or substantial distress".
From April 6 this requirement will be removed and nuisance callers will be liable for heavy fines. The ICO has issued penalties of £815,000 to nine firms since January 2012.
