RUMOURS that a popular garden centre in Cirencester could be closing down have been quashed by staff members, who said they have "absolutely no plans" to close the store.

An anonymous user of the Facebook page 'Spotted: Cirencester' asked followers if anyone knew if Dobbies Garden Centre, in the town, was closing.

The rumours came about after Tesco announced they would be shutting down more than 40 of its own stores, while making cuts of £250 million. Dobbies joined the Tesco group in 2008.

Facebook users seemed distraught at the rumour, with one person saying: "This is terrible! Of all the places in Cirencester to close why Dobbies?"

A spokesman from Dobbies Garden Centres has now officially confirmed the rumours are not true.

“We are pleased to confirm there is no substance whatsoever to these rumours," she said. "We have absolutely no plans to close our popular Cirencester store.”
