PRIVATE Eye has run a story which raises questions about the roles of Cotswold District Council (CDC) and Lord Bathurst in the expected development of thousands of new homes in the Chesterton area of Cirencester.

The satirical magazine points out that Lord Bathurst, a longstanding member of the Conservative party in the area, will be applying to the Tory-run council for permission to build 2,350 homes on his own land in Chesterton.

Private Eye also claims that Lord Bathurst and the leader of the district council, Cllr Lynden Stowe, met six times before CDC published its controversial Local Plan for new homes across the Cotswolds, which includes the 2,350 in Chesterton.

The Standard is mentioned in the article for its interview with Lord Bathurst in which he stated that he and council leader Cllr Lynden Stowe were not “meeting for dinner every night of the week”.

Private Eye's article also remarks that Lord Bathurst will sell 300 acres of arable land to allow the construction of the new homes by his own development company.

The magazine jokes that, as he owns a total of 15,500 acres of land, he is unlikely to miss a few hundred.
