A ROAD notorious for potholes and flooding will finally be repaired after years of misery for motorists.

The B4040 through Holloway will be fixed in March after plans to transform the pothole-ridden stretch of road were approved by Malmesbury Area Board – a decision-making body within Wiltshire Council.

It is just one of the routes which will benefit from Wiltshire Council’s upcoming programme of roadworks, with a total of more than 80 kilometres to be resurfaced or repaired.

Holloway is on the main road into Malmesbury and has been in need of improvement and repair for several years.

The Mayor of Malmesbury, Cllr Sue Poole, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that it has been selected and that the work should be starting in March."

She said drivers had long been calling for Wiltshire Council to repair the road.

“Once I was cornered by a man who gave me a whole pile of correspondence dating back to 2009, which pre-dates me even being on the council,” she said.

As well as the numerous potholes on the B4040, there is a spring underneath a manhole in the road and water is flowing downhill.

Work is currently taking place to patch up the leak.

Among other roads to be included in the works are nearly eight and half kilometres between Malmesbury and Minety, surface dressing on around 30 other roads and ongoing repairs to potholes across north Wiltshire.

Wiltshire councillor and member for highways, Cllr John Thomson, said: “The Local Highways Investment Fund 2014 to 2020 is being targeted at those roads in worse condition and includes minor roads as well as main roads.”

Cllr Thomson explained that, as well as judging roads on their condition, the frequency of traffic and importance of the route were also taken into consideration.

He added: “This process is accepted as a fair method of prioritising resources and targeting those roads in worse condition as well as arresting the deterioration of road surfaces in a lesser condition.”

Wiltshire Council has invested £52million in road repairs and improvements over the next six years and recently announced an extra £250,000 specifically for potholes.
