A CIRENCESTER school is top of the class when it comes to keeping its pupils fit and healthy.
Chesterton Primary School has just scooped a pair of awards in recognition of its varied sports programme and commitment to healthy lifestyles.
Headteacher David Williams said both accolades, one from the Department of Education and one from the Every Child Matters Agenda, were something the school could be really proud of.
He said: "We are delighted, it is recognition of all the work that goes on within the school.
"Two key people who made it possible are our healthy schools coordinator Heather Teather and our PE coordinator Sue Dearsley."
The school currently offers pupils a range of sports including gymnastics, rugby and football.
It also takes part in inter-school tournaments with other local primary schools and has lots of after-school sports activities.
Mr Williams added: "We are focused on the agenda of health living and this formally recognises the effort we have put in.
"The impact is primarily for the children because it affects them and if they have a love of PE and a healthy lifestyle they are learning habits which will carry on into adulthood."
