A TOTAL of 54 people were arrested during Gloucestershire Police’s crackdown on drink driving over the festive period.

From December 1 to January 1 the work by the police on drink driving resulted in 35 people being charged, 11 people currently on police bail and eight who blew over the limit on the roadside but not at a police station.

Chief Inspector Charlie Laporte said: “These figures are still too high but it is encouraging that the number of arrests is slightly down from last year.
 
"While the Christmas campaign is over we will continue our work to clamp down on drink driving all year round and educate people on what is safe and social driving.

“The dangers and possible implications for the driver and other road users of drink driving have been clear for a long time - so there really is no excuse for doing it."
