A FIREFIGHTER has appeared in court accused of causing the death of a Rendcomb man by driving carelessly at a blaze in the village.

Peter Newdeck, 47, is alleged to have parked his fire engine in an unsafe position, without the blue flashing lights on but with dazzling headlights, which caused the driver of an Audi to lose control, mount the kerb and hit two pedestrians.

One of the pedestrians, 43-year-old Stuart Frost, from Rendcomb, was killed and the other, 31-year-old Christopher Eyre, also from the village, suffered serious leg injuries in the incident on the A435 on December 20 last year.

Mr Newdeck, of Oldbury Road in Tewkesbury, appeared at Gloucester Crown Court today accused of causing death by careless driving. He was bailed until a hearing on March 27.

The court heard that Mr Newdeck’s defence team will likely question whether the 64-year-old driver of the Audi, Paul Holmes, was dazzled and if his Parkinson’s disease played any part.
