HIGHWAYS chiefs are reviewing the safety of a road where a popular man died in a crash, following calls to lower the speed limit.

Father-of-three Robert Hoy was killed on June 25 when his car was in a head-on crash with another vehicle as he was turning into Waterland Outdoor Pursuits in Spratsgate Lane, where he was a sailing instructor.

Since then, Waterland and the Standard have been calling for the speed limit on the stretch of road near the centre to be reduced from 60mph to 30mph, to prevent further accidents.

Following an inquest into 64-year-old Mr Hoy’s death earlier this month, where a verdict of accidental death was given, Gloucestershire County Council is planning to review the limit on the road in the Cotswold Water Park.

Scott Tompkins, lead highways commissioner at the council, said: “We’re in the process of arranging reflective posts for the entrance of Cotswold Water Park and started reviewing the accident data for the area.

“Before we can begin to discuss the next steps we have to look very closely at the coroner’s report and meet with local parish councils in the new year.”

So far, the campaign to reduce the speed limit has received support from hundreds of Water Park residents and the Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown.
