BIRLIP resident Sam Iddles has won the ‘Young Volunteer of the Year Award’ for his efforts as a volunteer at the Sue Ryder store in Cheltenham.

Sam, 16, was one of 71 volunteers nominated for the award organised by Sue Ryder.

He started volunteering at the shop as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Award at the age of 14 and has become an invaluable member of the team.

Sam said: “Over 5 years ago, my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer; she was suffering and the conditions in the hospital were just appalling and horrendous and they weren’t helping her enjoy herself.

“When she went to Leckhampton Court Hospice, I found that it was so much better in every way compared to the hospital.

“It was really relaxed, friendly and the atmosphere was brilliant. I realised that in order to maintain these amazing conditions, a lot of money is required in the upkeep of the hospice.

"That’s why I chose Sue Ryder because I feel that l owe them so much and I can also help others get the same excellent treatment which my grandmother received.”

The award was presented to the winners at Speakers House, House of Commons, on October 21.

Head of Volunteering at Sue Ryder Tracey Le Gallez commented: “Each and every one of our volunteers is invaluable to us and we can’t thank them enough for giving us their time and skills.

“Without their support, we simply could not exist.”
