THE DULCET tones of a choir hailing from a place in Germany founded by a monk from Malmesbury could be heard at the town’s historic abbey earlier this month.

Bad Hersfeld was founded in 736 by St Lullas, who was born in Malmesbury and educated in the town’s Abbey before leaving for Germany.

The Modellschule Obersberg Youth Choir from Bad Hersfeld visited the town earlier this month.

After being given a reception by the town's council at its headquarters the choir performed at the historic Malmesbury Abbey.

Sue Poole, mayor of Malmesbury said the choir's visit was a huge success.

She said: “It was a really privilege to meet with the choir and their teachers. They are a remarkable group of young people. Apart from the brief civic reception for them on the Wednesday, I was also involved in taking some of them on a tour round the town on Saturday morning, and, of course, thoroughly enjoyed their concert in the Abbey on Saturday evening. They are very talented. I do hope we can build on this link and I should very much like to visit Bad Hersfeld myself sometime in the future.”
