A CIRENCESTER business has won a top prize after it was recognised as a firm that it grows its own talent through apprentices.

St James' Place Wealth Management was highly commended in the newcomer large employer of the year category at the Thames Valley National Apprenticeship Awards 2014.

The awards, now in their eleventh year, are run by the National Apprenticeship Service and recognise excellence in businesses that grow their own talent with apprentices, and apprentices who have made a significant contribution to their workplace.

Winners and highly commended entries were announced at a ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Swindon earlier this month.

Chris Edwards, from St James' Place, accepted the award with colleague Sue Kingston and they had a really enjoyable evening.

"It was great to see so many young and enthusiastic people in one room and was fantastic for St. James’ Place to be nominated for an award," he said. "It was an achievement that everyone was really proud of. It really showed how valued apprentices are and was amazing to see the achievements of so many apprentices in so many different occupations."

Skills minister Nick Boles said events like the National Apprenticeship Awards showcase how important apprenticeships are to employers and individuals.

"It is fast becoming the norm for young people to choose between an apprenticeship or university as a route to a great career," he said.

"I congratulate all of those who have received an apprenticeship award. We all want to make our parents proud as we grow up. The apprenticeship award winners will have done just that."
