A FAIRFORD schoolboy has proved he is a top chef with his dish of loin of pork and scrumpy sauce and will go on to represent Gloucestershire in a regional cooking competition.

Kyeran Francis, from Coln House School entered into the South West Chef of the Year competition with two of his classmates, Rhys Vallender and Scott Whiteley.

Each pupil from the special needs school in Fairford was asked to choose a main course dish to serve three people, using local ingredients.

The school was delighted when all three of the boys were asked to attend the Gloucestershire semi finals earlier this month, as only four places are given in this stage of the competition.

The South West Chef of the Year Award sets out to demonstrate skill, creativity in cooking, and knowledge of produce from the South West.

Winner Kyeran wowed the judges, who are often chefs themselves, with his dish of loin of pork with scrumpy sauce, candied walnuts, crisp black pudding and hispi cabbage.

He and his classmates chose vegetables that were available from the school garden and purchased meat from Fairford butcher Andrew Butlers.

During the county semi-finals, the boys worked hard to create their meals whilst being watched by the judges. After nearly two hours of cooking they presented their dishes and Kyeran was crowned winner.

He will now represent Gloucestershire in the final of the competition at Ashburton Cookery School in Devon on October 4.

Before the final he will be mentored by judge and chef David Everitt-Matthias of Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham.
