PEOPLE are calling for more safety measures to be put in place at a “lethal” junction, following a serious crash near Kemble last week.

The A429 at Kemble was blocked for the majority of the morning on Tuesday, September 9, after a Land Rover flipped and landed in a hedge at the notorious Culkerton Crossroads, while a woman had to be cut free from her Fiat by firefighters.

Now, residents and regular users of the road to Malmesbury are calling for something to be done about the dangerous junction, with many people believing cars simply go too fast on this particular stretch.

Jon Shepherd works in an office at Kemble Business Park, just metres from where the accident happened. He said he often heard car horns blaring as they travelled along the road.

“I’ve lived in Kemble for eight years and I think it’s the most dangerous crossing here,” said the chief operating officer at Cotswold Outdoor.

“We need to look at measures to reduce speed and put up a sign to ban overtaking. We have a lot of people working here and want to make it safer.”

Cotswold Outdoor is one of the first office blocks on the park and staff have a direct view of the A429 from their windows.

“We see a lot obviously, because of where we are and we would like to see a solution,” added Jon. “I just think more awareness coming up to the crossroads is needed to show people the crossing is there.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said the last fatal accident on the crossroads was 24 years ago, with three injuries in the last three years.

He added that although the council was committed to reducing crashes on Wiltshire roads, there were currently no plans for work on this particular junction.

He said: “We would encourage anyone who has any concerns about a particular stretch of road to raise them through their local area board where these can be discussed.”
