AN 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an attack in Swindon last week.

The incident took place in the Town Gardens, Quarry Road, Old Town, at 12.55pm on Thursday, July 24.

A 25-year-old man was attacked by another man close to the refreshment stand in the park.

The victim received a stab wound to his arm and leg as a result of the assault.

Immediately after the attack, the suspect ran away from the scene.

The weapon used in the attack was swiftly located by police officers who cordoned off part of the park for forensic purposes.

The victim was taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon with serious injuries but has since been released.

An 18-year-old man from Swindon was arrested on the evening of Friday, July 25. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Officers believe there are two outstanding offenders involved and police are already hunting for them.

Increased police patrols in the Old Town area will continue for the next few days.

Detective Sergeant Phil Walker from Swindon CID said: “This was a violent incident which took place in a busy public park during the summer holidays.

"This is not a random attack and we believe that all parties involved are known to each other.

“Officers were on the scene within minutes of the incident being reported and the weapon used was quickly seized by officers.

“The investigation continues and we are pursuing several lines of enquiries.

“I would ask anyone with information on the assault to contact Wiltshire Police immediately.”

Swindon Superintendent Andrew Carr said: “I would like to reassure the Old Town community that a robust police investigation is ongoing.

“It is likely that you will see a heightened police presence in and around the local area in the next few days.

“We have increased police patrols in certain areas and I would advise anyone with concerns or issues to make contact with officers directly when they are on the beat.”
