THERE are not many people who can say that they have lived through two World Wars, but Janet Hobbs from Eastleach is one.

She was born just three months before the start of World War One and recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

Born on April 30, 1914, Janet was thrilled to receive a card from the Queen.

She was also overjoyed to receive a beautiful large hand-made card from the children of Hatherop School along with dozens of other cards and good wishes.

She attributes her longevity to having a good family, enjoying good living and outdoor pursuits such as hockey, tennis, cricket and ice skating and even remembers her family skating on the River Thames when it froze over many years ago.

Her recipe for a long and healthy life is a simple one. “Be happy,” she said.

Not content with having one birthday party, Janet has had three birthday bashes. She celebrated on her birthday itself with family, some of whom had travelled from Canada, Australia and Italy to be there.

The village helped to mark the occasion the following week when 94 residents packed in to Eastleach Village Hall, while a tea party was organised by the Monday Club at Beaumoor Place.

Janet still has unfulfilled ambitions and said she would love to have travelled more, especially to South America.

“I love geography and learning more about our wonderful world,” she said.
