SCHOOLCHILDREN from Cirencester got in touch with nature when they visited The Living Rainforest near Newbury.

Hatherop Castle Prep 1 pupils enjoyed a guided tour of the rainforest which is home to more than 700 species of animals and plants.

They also explored a big collection of tropical plants and were amazed to find out that Swiss cheese plant tastes more like ice-cream than cheese and pineapples do not grow on the trees.

Deborah Whitehouse, a spokesman for the school said: “We had a great visit and we have learnt a lot of interesting facts. Now we know if we got lost in the real rainforest we could survive.

“It was so lovely to be able to visit it just one hour from school, rather than fly to the other side of the world.

“Our tour guide, Anna, was very impressed with our background knowledge and excellent behaviour.”
