GREEN-FINGERED Kodey Holt has dug his way to glory in a bid to win a nationwide gardening competition.

The Ampney Crucis Primary School pupil is one of three national finalists in the Key Stage One category of the RHS Young School Gardener of the Year 2014 .

“My dad has a big vegetable patch. He grows potatoes, onions and pumpkins at Christmas,” said Kodey, six, whose favourite part of gardening is eating the things he has grown. He was nominated by his gardening teacher and school governor Alison Sykes-Fryer.

Competition judges said his nomination stood out with his knowledge of the preparing soil, the importance of bugs and worms and how flowers get pollinated.

“For a six-year-old to know these sorts of things, well, he’ll pass his biology GCSE no trouble,” said Alison.

The budding gardener will be presented with a garden trowel with his name engraved on it as prize for being a finalist.

If he wins in his category in June he will receive a set of gardening tools and £250 worth of National Garden Gift vouchers for the school.
