BUILDING work on the former Akeman Court site in Lewis Lane is underway.
The former sheltered housing complex was left closed by Bromford Housing Association in 2008. After the building was torn down last year the site was boarded up.
Now work is underway and the site team of Bromford Housing Association and EG Carter and Co Ltd hopes to have everything finished by March 2015.
On the site, 13 new homes are being created. There will be seven two-bed flats available to buy and five three-bed and a four-bed house available to rent. All will be offered at 80 per cent of the market value.
“This site has been empty for such a long time. I think the neighbours are glad to see something actually happening now,” said Bromford contracts manager Christopher Roberts. “The concern was what the housing was to be replaced by,” he added.
Before work could begin a full archaeological was carried out and a number of finds discovered. They included the remains of a medieval rubbish dump.
The artefacts recovered were donated to the Corinium Museum.
