A GIANT duck race in Lechlade this May bank holiday will raise money for two important charities.

More than 4,000 plastic ducks, sponsored by residents, visitors and businesses, will be released into the River Thames from the top of Halfpenny Bridge before travelling 250 metres downriver in a race to the finish line in the event on May 5.

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Matthew Pinsent will launch the race which will be in aid of the Royal Air Forces Association and the Cotswold Water Park Trust.

It is also being supported by the Riverside Pub, Lechlade Town Council, the Environment Agency and Gloucestershire Police.

Organiser Sgt Ali Hedworth from RAF Brize Norton said he was pleased that money raised would go to RAFA, helping to look after serving and former members of the RAF and their families.

Organisers have arranged other fun, family activities to take place on the day including funfair rides, face painting, sweet stalls and a barbecue.

The day runs from 10am until 5pm, with the duck race taking place at 2pm.
