TALENTED music students from Cirencester College gave up their time to treat elderly residents in the town to an afternoon performance of some of their favourite songs.

The five musicians, under the guidance of lecturer Alison Porter, delighted residents at Paternoster House, Watermoor House and Ashley House with two shows just before the Easter holidays.

Several members of the audience clapped and cheered as the students played and sang a diverse range of music ranging from Mozart and Ivor Novello to gypsy jazz and a few numbers that the students had written themselves.

The concerts were organised by the college after building up strong links with the community homes through participating in the Churn Project’s Cirencester Young Neighbours scheme for many years.

More than 30 students from the college now take part in the scheme, which sees young people donating an hour of their time every week to visit an elderly person who is lonely.

Celia Page, co-ordinator of the Young Neighbours scheme, said the elderly residents really enjoyed the students’ performance.

“I have to thank the students very much for making the day of about 70 care home residents and carers,” she said.

“They are all really talented and it was so good of them to share their talents. I hope that we can all do it all again soon.”
