STAFF at the Cirencester branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau have launched an appeal for new volunteers to come forward to meet increasing demand.

The Cricklade Street-based team have dealt with more than 700 cases since December, when it was decided that branches in Cheltenham and Tewkesbury would close.

Nick Lee, manager of Cirencester CAB, said that volunteers do need specific qualification but should enjoy helping people.

“We need volunteers who are friendly and approachable, have basic computing skills, want to support people to resolve their problems and have time to volunteer for eight hours a week,” he said.

The CAB provides free, independent and confidential advice to members of the public on their rights and responsibilities.

Cllr Carole Topple, Cotswold District Council cabinet member for communities and health, said the Cirencester branch, which has recently undergone refurbishments, provides much needed help across the district.

“The council is very grateful to all volunteers who come forward to train as advisers and help others,” she said.

“It is good to see the improvements, including an online email facility and forthcoming freephone service. This will enhance the way in which advisers interact with their clients.”

An information session for people interested in volunteering will be held at the branch at 2pm on Monday, May 12.
