MALMESBURY firefighters got themselves in a lather at the weekend to help the town’s flood stricken football club.

They managed for raise more than £850 to be split between the Vics and the Fire Fighters Charity with an all day car wash at the station just opposite the Flying Monk ground.

Townspeople have rallied round to help the committee meet the bills after secretary Julie Exton revealed there was no cash in the bank to pay match officials following two winters of repeated flooding.

Matches had to be cancelled of many occasions because the pitch was under water.

Cake sales, donations and appeals to locals to boost crowds at home games have helped them to reach the end of the season without closing.

A campaign of fundraising and grant applications is planned over the next few months, along with a repeat of last year’s VicFest and summer clubhouse open evenings for families, to help the club get onto a firmer financial footing.
