COUNCILLORS have said it would be wrong to take enforcement action against a Lechlade charity shop that placed signs on a listed building without permission.

At the most recent Cotswold District Council planning committee meeting, councillors debated whether enforcement action should be taken over the unauthorised Cotswold Council for Voluntary Services signs at its shop in Burford Street.

Although the colourful signs require Listed Building consent, councillors said they did not do any harm to the character of the area.

A local resident had complained and CDC councillor for Lechlade Sandra Carter said she was disappointed with the planning committee’s decision.

“I think the signs are an eyesore. It is a Conservation Area so they shouldn’t be such ghastly colours,” she said.

“I’m a bit surprised the charity shop actually went against the locals. I’m still hoping the shop will consider taking the signs down anyway.”
