MORE than 120 people across the county give up their spare time to be Special Constables and now Gloucestershire Police is calling on more people to sign up.

The Special Constabulary is the country’s part time police force and made up of members of the public who volunteer to help police their local community.

Earlier this month, Special Constables were out in force across Cirencester and Stroud to mark National Specials Weekend.

The weekend, which involved a number of prominent community-focused operations, was designed to highlight the pivotal role carried out by volunteers.

In Cirencester, Special Constables carried out over 100 hours of work to tackle anti-social behaviour by visiting a number of licensed premises and patrolling the town centre.

David Pedrick-Friend, Chief Officer of the Special Constabulary, said that people across the county are particularly concerned with issues around anti-social behaviour.

“National Specials Weekend was the ideal opportunity to run these additional operations and to support the Police and Crime Commissioner’s plan of less crime and more peace and good order,” he said.

“We are pleased with the weekend’s results and hope that they show the local community that their local policing team are dedicated to tackling the offences that matter most to them.”

Gloucestershire Police is currently accepting applications from people who are interested in joining the force as a Special Constable.
