WOMAD, which organises festivals around the world, revealed this week that it has withdrawn from plans for a WOMAD Russia this year.

In a statement it said last year’s festival had been a huge success, but: “As everyone knows, WOMAD was built on the idea of respect for others. With the current state of Russian aggression within Ukraine and the military build-up on the borders, we cannot continue with a good heart to partner in an event that is in large part-funded by the Russian Government.

We sincerely hope that the political situation changes soon and we can return and continue working with the people of Russia and the communities of the North Caucasus.”
