A MAN has died on the notorious A417 road near Birdlip after struggling to move his broken down car off the road.

The 59-year-old from Cheltenham, who was travelling with his son, was killed by his own black Toyota as he tried to get it off the carriageway at Crickley Hill, near the Air Balloon roundabout, at around 9.30pm on Friday, February 7.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: “While attempting to move the vehicle from the carriageway the man was struck by the car and suffered injuries.

“Paramedics and police attended the scene and the victim was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital where he died a short while later.”

The man was thought to be travelling northbound on the A417, in the direction of Cirencester, when the car broke down.

Officers confirmed that the man's death had been reported to the Gloucestershire coroner.

The road was closed in both directions between the Air Balloon Roundabout and the Shurdington Road junction following the collision and re-opened again around four hours later at 12.30am on Saturday, February 8.
