A TRAFFIC operation run in Cheltenham at the end of last week helped identify over 20 offences.
Operation Twining saw Gloucestershire Police join up with local partner agencies to target criminality on the roads and the 'fatal four' offences most responsible for causing death while driving - excessive speed, not wearing a seat belt, driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while distracted.
Officers were based at Cheltenham Racecourse throughout Friday (January 31) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology was used to spot cars that were linked to crime or traffic offences.
Several thousand vehicles were checked and amongst the results, four motorists were stopped for speeding, three vehicles were found to have bald tyres, one had no brake lights, two had no insurance and one tested positive for red diesel, which can only be used in agricultural or construction vehicles.
PC Nicholas Cook said: "This was a joint partnership operation with VOSA, Cheltenham Borough Council and HM revenue and customs.
"The number of vehicles breaking the law amounted to a very low proportion but was nonetheless significant.
"These people were flouting traffic laws that are there to protect them and others.
"A number of fines were issued and three vehicles were seized. Hopefully the roads will now be a safer place for everyone."
