Cotswold District Council gives update on Le Spa after Cirencester residents brand the former health retreat an "eyesore"

THE site of a former luxury health retreat in Cirencester has been branded an “eyesore” after being left empty for more than two and a half years.

The Le Spa health farm, located in Stratton, has been abandoned in a ring of steel fencing ever since the business was forced to go into liquidation in July 2011.

People have recently taken to social networking sites to air their grievances about the state of the building.

One user wrote: “It looks like an eyesore at the moment as it has been left to ruin.”

While another wrote: “It is such a shame. The building looked lovely when it was actually looked after.”

However change could be on the cards for Le Spa, as Cotswold District Council, this week, confirmed that the property is wind and weather proofed and is checked on a daily basis to ensure it is appropriately protected.

Le Spa closed down in the summer of 2011 after club representatives confirmed that membership had halved in its last two years of business and that its future was looking bleak.

Following its closure, a number of developers came forward with a view of turning the building into a care home with sixty bedrooms with an additional 23 homes on the surrounding land.

However, none of the plans ever came to fruition and it has since been left unoccupied and gathering dust.

Speaking about the future of the building, a spokesman for Cotswold District Council said: “We have received confirmation that the site is still in the hands of the receivers due to the Financial Services Authority’s involvement with the relevant bank who still own the previous owner’s debt and therefore the site.

“The receivers are, however, keen to move forward with the sale of the site as soon as they have the authority to do so.”

As of yet there are no current planning applications to develop the Le Spa site.
