A MAN posing as a stranded motorist on the M4 is thought to have scammed Good Samaritan drivers out of hundreds of pounds.
A 44-year-old Bristol man has been arrested and Wiltshire Police are investigating reports of the elaborate fraud, which starts with a man standing slip roads between junction 15 at Swindon and junction 19 at Bristol carrying a fuel can.
He claims his has run out of fueland asks for a lift to the nearest services station, usually Leigh Delamere or Membury.
On the way he takes a call from what he claims is the Highways Agency or the police demanding he moves his car at a cost of £800.
A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “Those giving him a lift have then offered to help out towards the cost. Once dropped at the services they never hear from him again.
“To date it is believed the offender has been able to acquire hundreds of pounds from victims.”
Detectives want to hear from anyone who may have been targeted in a similar way or have information on the incidents. They can contact Det Sgt Chris Feerick at Melksham on 101 or leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 08700 555111.
The suspect has been bailed for further investigation.
