THERE will be twice the amount of shouting in Fairford as the town could soon be welcoming a deputy town crier.
Maurice Jones has been town crier of Fairford for over 30 years and will soon be teaching his new deputy all the tricks of the trade.
“Just in case I’m taken ill or if I’m off out anywhere, then someone can do it for me,” said Maurice.
“There are quite a few town criers who have deputies. The new deputy will follow me around so they can learn how to do it.”
Maurice became the town crier for Fairford in 1983 and was awarded a meritorious service medal in October 2013 following three decades of dedication.
Anyone interested in becoming Fairford’s next town crier can call the town council on 01285 712344.
