A MAN was killed and another is in hospital suffering from serious injuries after a South Cerney man driving an Audi hatchback mounted a verge and hit them on the A435 near Rendcomb on Friday, December 20.

Stuart Paul Frost, a 43-year-old Rendcomb man,  was pronounced dead at the scene and a 31-year-old local man was rushed to the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol  unconscious with bad leg injuries,  but is now conscious and alert.

Following the incident, which occurred  around 7.40pm, the 64-year-old driver of the Audi, who was uninjured, attended a voluntary interview with Gloucestershire Constabulary but was not arrested.

Paul Hodgkinson, deputy leader of the Cotswold District Council Lib Dems and road safety campaigner, who leads road safety group, North Cotswolds Rural area Against Speeding Harm (No Crash), believes work needs to be done on road safety for single lane carriageways like the A435 in the new year.

He said: “Many single lane carriageways are ones that are having lots of accidents. The A435 is one of these roads.

“All it says to me is that we have to try to work on it again in the new year to try to reduce the number of accidents.

“It is awful what has happened, particularly as we are so close to Christmas.

“The local community is very upset about it. Clearly the last couple of months has been bad for accidents in Gloucestershire. We have had two deaths in close succession at the back end of last month – now we have another death on the A435.”

The family of Mr Frost have asked for privacy and declined to comment.

Gloucestershire Fire Service was dealing with a house fire around the time of the incident  and it is believed there were a number of people in the area.

The coroners court in Gloucester opened an inquest into Mr Frost’s death on Friday, December 24.
