A STRATTON neighbourhood will be visible for miles around after residents flicked the switch to the street’s annual charity Christmas light display.

Hundreds of people braved the wintery conditions to marvel at the houses in Vale Road as they became illuminated for the 11th year running.

Husband and wife team, Robin and Pauline Sollis, who spend an estimated £300 on their annual festive display, were in high spirits on Saturday night as they handed out mince pies and mulled wine to the crowds of people.

Pauline said: “It was raining hard and really windy but we still had quite a good turnout on the night. We had between 200 and 250 people come out.”

The annual event, which usually sees around 400 people show up, is put on to support a number of local charities including Guide Dogs for the Blind, Salvation Army and Stratton Pre School.

Robin and Pauline’s display now boasts an indoor Christmas village, which has been a big hit among those who have already visited.

She said: “It’s been really well received, everybody has just loved it. They go in to the garage and their reaction is just ‘wow’”.

Despite the lower than expected turnout, over £200 was raised for local charities and money is still expected to come in between now and Christmas Day.

Pauline said: “The whole street looks lovely, every house has joined in. It’s been a real community effort.”

Vale Road will be open to visitors everyday in the run up to Christmas between 5pm and 8pm.
