A MAN from Swindon has been sentenced to six years in jail after being found guilty of rape.

Today at Bristol Crown Court Hamid Erfani, 34 (01/04/1979), of North Street, Swindon, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of rape.

Erfani had been found guilty at an early trial of one count of rape against a woman over 16.

The assault took place at a residential address in Swindon on November 4 2012.

Detective Constable James Newbery of Swindon CID said: “Firstly, I would like to praise the courage shown by Erfani’s victim who has had to endure the added trauma of reliving her ordeal throughout a trial.

“Erfani has refused to take any responsibility for his actions by pleading not guilty to the offence.

“He preyed on his victim who was feeling particularly vulnerable at the time of the attack.

“I would urge anyone who has been the victim of any sexual assault to contact Wiltshire Police immediately. We have dedicated officers who are specially trained to help those who have been abused.

Victims can also seek support and counselling from the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) based at the New Swindon Sanctuary.

The SARC offers a 24-hour helpline on 0808 168 0024 or log onto newswindonsanctuary.co.uk
