A FRIENDSHIP that started as Europe struggled to recover from the Second World War celebrates its Diamond Anniversary next year.

The link between Malmesbury and German town Niebull is believed to have been one of the first in the country.

Just nine years after the end of the war and part of a Wiltshire-wide initiative, it was an attempt to reconcile differences between the peoples of both countries and break down prejudices formed as a result of the conflict.

Other twinnings have come and gone over the decades, but the link between the two towns remains strong and now there are plans to mark the anniversary with a special visit next July.

Vice chairman Zofia Gale said: “Those first exchanges were very important and we would really love to reach out to anybody who was on them.”

Groups of teenagers took part in the first trips and youth leader Cyril Cartmell was one of the driving forces, along with his German counterpart and teachers. The first to cross the channel was a group of German youngsters who were hosted in Malmesbury homes.

As the years passed more people became involved and links with a French town, Gien, were also formed.

“What is wonderful is that Malmesbury School has really got the school exchanges going, not only with Niebull, but with Gien and Malmesbury our friendship town in South Africa.”

Spin off twinnings between the tennis club, walkers and choirs had also been born.

As well as having a chance to sample the culture it was a chance to experience life as their hosts did,” explained Mrs Gale.

“It is possible to travel the world and still not meet people in a meaningful way. I think it is very important that we see the human perspective. It is very different from going on holiday.”

Normally the group does its own fundraising, but because next year’s visit by the Germans is special it has been awarded £430 by the carnival committee to help pay for trips.

It is also hoping to hear from former members, especially people who took part in the first exchanges and those with photographs for a diamond anniversary display. Call 01666 823871 to take part.
