Brinkworth farm friends pining for missing "mum" Billy the labrador
ANIMALS at a smallholding near Malmesbury are pining after the labrador that “mothered” them disappeared.
Billy ,who likes to watch over newborns and is happy to share his basket with kittens, ducks and even a piglet or a lamb, has been missing for three weeks and is now thought to have been stolen from Kinecroft, Brinkworth.
His desperate owner Dawn Stevens said: “Whatever we bring into the house he mothers. If I have got a sick pig or a duckling he is there watching over it, trying to make it better.”
Billy was sitting in the garden with his playmate Bess watching her in the field mending some chicken wire on October 3.
“They always sit at the gate waiting for me,” she told the Standard.” I looked up from what I was doing and I realised they were not there. I thought they must have chased a fox.”
“I went looking for them. Billy always comes when I call, but he didn’t this time. When I came back I could hear loud music and there was a white van in the lane, but by the time I got there it had gone.
“Ten minutes later Bessie came back. She was just petrified and exhausted. She had run so hard.”
Searches by family, friends and neighbours since then have failed to find Billy, who would have celebrated his fourth birthday last week.
“I know that he would come home if he could,” said Dawn.
Bessie, who is just a year old, is missing her friend most of all. “They do everything together, they play all day long.”
Billy, who came from Bath Cats and Dogs home as a puppy, was intended to be company for an older dog Ben, but his caring nature shone through almost immediately.
The faithful companion would always go out with his mistress when she went to help one of her pigs farrowing and he also took special care of family cat Tinkerbell when she arrived as a kitten.
Billy, who has a small white patch on his chest and is neutered, was wearing a red collar when he disappeared.
Another dog who went missing the day before in Brokenborough has still not been found. Jack Russell Esme, was last seen chasing a bird.
Anyone with information about either dog can contact the Dog Lost register online at doglost.co.uk or Malmesbury Police on 101.
