CIRENCESTER has been invaded by an army of guerrillas hell-bent on tidying up the town’s roundabouts.

Volunteers from the Park Community Group have begun a guerrilla gardening campaign, going out early in the morning or later in the evening when the traffic is quiet.

The first outing in the campaign was on Good Friday, when the group mowed and trimmed the roundabout and verges at the top of Tetbury Road.

The group’s vice chairman Patrick Moylan said residents had long been concerned about the state of the roundabouts.

"The first thing that visitors and tourists notice when they come into town is how unkempt the perimeter road is," he said.

"People have been complaining for years and suggestions for sponsorship have been kicked into the long grass - if you'll excuse the pun.

"We're going to continue to do our bit and let's see what anyone else comes up with."

Although Gloucestershire County Council employs contractors to maintain the Cirencester ring road, because of costs and safety concerns work is only undertaken twice a year.

Volunteer Meg Blumson said the ring road looked awful: "Rather than just moan we thought we'd actually do something."
