Evo-Stik Southern Div 1 S&W.

Cirencester Town 1 Wimborne Town 1.

A LACK of clinical finishing in front of goal prevented Cirencester Town from taking all three points in their penultimate game of the season on Tuesday night.

Ben Wells’ header in the 39th minute cancelled out a similar goal by Wimborne striker Steve Smith almost 20 minutes previously.

After the break, the hosts dominated possession and played at a high tempo without really carving out too many chances.

The ones that came their way they spurned, none more so than in the 84th minute.

Substitute striker Shane Bumphrey had been the hero of the Development Side’s cup semifinal win on Saturday when bagging hat-trick. On this occasion, he spooned a golden chance over the bar after being set free following a driving run from the always influential Wells.

Ciren perhaps edged the opening half on points but it was Wimborne who went ahead on 20 minutes when slack marking at a corner allowed Smith to steer home a near-post header.

Scott Griffin tested Jason Harvell with a near-post header of his own before the Wimborne keeper could do nothing to stop Wells from nodding home the equaliser inside the six-yard box after captain Shane Anson had fashioned a pinpoint cross while in full flight to the byline.

In the second half, apart from an early Aidan Sainsbury drive from long range, Wimbone were shackled completely by the Ciren back four, but the home side’s offensive players could not turn possession into points.

Liam O’Brien and Griffin (twice) failed to hit the target with chances as Ciren gradually upped the tempo.

It looked as if they were to going to gain their just reward in the 84th minute after some nice inter-passing led to Wells driving at the heart of the Wimborne defence, before releasing Bumphrey inside the box.

But it was hands to heads all round in the Ciren camp as the striker, so prolific on Saturday, lifted his shot a yard over the bar with just the goalie to beat.

Ciren conclude their season on Saturday when they entertain champions Poole in front of what looks set to be a bumper crowd. Cirencester Town: Garner, Anson, Mortimer-Jones, O’Brien, Henry, Beeden, Shepherd, Wells, Collier (Bumphrey, 65), Griffin (Smith, 65), Bennett. Unused subs: Pitt, Jehu.
