Abingdon United 0 Cirencester Town 2.

SPECTACULAR goals from Ben Wells and Sam Collier helped Cirencester Town extend their unbeaten run to seven games with a 2-0 victory at Abingdon United.

A composed but much-changed Ciren side controlled the game in the opening half and were never under any serious threat in a scrappy second period.

The visitors were again without Chris Thompson (injured), while Jon Beeden (working) and Sam Packer (holiday) were also absent.

Jamie Reid was still suffering from the knock he took at Merthyr on Tuesday night, so he was not risked from the bench. Into the squad came two 17-year-olds, Kieran Jones and Tim Bond from the Development Team, Kieran starting in midfield with Tim on the bench.

As a result of the absences, James Mortimer-Jones moved to right back with Shane Anson taking up a centre back position and regaining the captain’s armband.

Cirencester opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a superb pass-and-move goal started and finished by Wells.

Wells freed Bumphrey down the left wing and then made good ground to meet the winger’s cross from the byline, heading home powerfully into the top left corner.

Midway through the half, Cirencester extended their lead with another cracking goal.

Just inside the Abingdon half, Aidan Bennett flicked a ball over his marker’s head where it fell into the path of Collier. Without hesitation, the striker took the shot on as the ball bounced up and struck a superb right-footed volley from fully 35 yards that screamed into the back of the net, without keeper Foster moving.

Abingdon, meanwhile, persisted in long-ball tactics to their front runners, but failed to produce a serious threat on Glyn Garner’s goal.

The game became somewhat dull in the second half, with both defences pushing forward into a cramped midfield and a series of long balls into the space resulting in numerous offside decisions.

In the 63rd minute, there was a good Ciren move down the left, involving Wells, Dunton, Collier and Jones, but Foster managed to deal with the eventual cross. Three minutes later, Matthew Biddle headed over the Cirencester bar following a left wing corner.

The promise of the first half may not have been fulfilled but Cirencester were delighted to extend their unbeaten run and keep another clean sheet.
