DELIGHTED parents said the opening of a Cirencester park following months of protests has been the best day of their children’s lives.

The playground at Corinium Via Housing Development sparked fierce controversy after being deemed ‘too bright’ by a small number of residents.

But following a campaign to open the playground children were finally able to enjoy the new facilities on Sunday.

Declan Cunningham, whose eight-year-old granddaughter Ruby has been at the heart of the campaign, said: "It is remarkable how many children are outside playing.

"When Ruby and I went on Sunday she told me it was the best day of her life."

High fencing has kept children away since the playground was due to open last summer.

Planning permission was granted for the park in June 2011.

Mum-of-one Shelleigh Bailey, 39, who lives at the housing development, said: "It is wonderful the park has finally opened, particularly in time for the good weather."
