Evo-Stik Div 1 South & West.

Cirencester Town 3 Clevedon Town 1.

AS half-time team talks go, it must have been a corker.

Cirencester Town, toothless in the first half, scored within 60 seconds of the restart, more or less killed the game off with a second goal four minutes later, and capped it all with a goal-of-the-season candidate.

It takes their winning sequence to four and the squad are clearly buzzing ahead of Tuesday night’s clash at Merthyr, who are three places above them in fourth.

Cirencester boss Brian Hughes was again without the services of Chris Thompson, although Jon Beeden replaced him seamlessly in the back four.

Hughes opted to leave Jamie Reid, returning from suspension, on the bench and chose Shane Bumphrey over Josh Morse in the battle of his two in-form left wingers.

But Ciren will certainly have to be quicker out of the blocks in Wales on Tuesday.

A dry, hard pitch with limited grass cover made for some erratic passing as both sides favoured the high, and not very handsome, option.

It says much for a forgettable first 45, that a near-own goal was the closest either side came to breaking the stalemate.

Ben Wells hit a deep corner beyond the back post where Brad Hooper returned it with interest into the six-yard box and Adi Adams, in trying to clear, steered it against his own bar.

In the first two minutes after the break, Ciren posed more attacking threat than they had through the entire opening 45.

Wells pounced on a Rory Prendergast slip to power clear into the box and he was given all the time in the world to pick out Shane Bumphrey, who calmly passed it into an empty net.

With Town players finding acres of space in the threadbare Cleveden defence, Wells then hit a goal-bound shot which was deflected inches over the corner of post and bar.

But the hosts were 2-0 up in the 50th minute, Sam Collier lofting a deep cross from the left and this time it was Aidan Bennett who was given the luxury of picking his spot under little pressure.

Ciren continued to rampage forward, with the beleaguered Cleveden beginning to argue among themselves.

Wells’ firmly-struck set pieces have been a feature of the Ciren season but he will never hit a better one than his goal direct from a corner in the 65th minute.

Bent with the outside of his right foot from the right side, the ball was still travelling when it nestled into the top corner at the back post.

The Ciren defence, in which Henry and Dunton had been particularly frugal, did suffer a rare scare in the 85th minute when the ball broke to sub Dan Williams on the right and Glyn Garner made a fine diving save to his left to parry the fierce drive.

The post-match Ciren celebrations were slightly soured, however, when Cleveden denied them a clean sheet with literally the last kick of the game.

A corner from the right was headed down by Clayton Fortune and Williams hooked it home off the underside of the bar.

A chalk and cheese display by Ciren, then, but when they were good in the second half they were Gorgonzola. Cirencester Town: Garner, Anson (capt), Dunton, Beeden, Henry, Mortimer-Jones, Hooper (Reid, 76), Wells, Collier (Griffin, 76), Bennett (Packer, 76), Bumphrey.
