SNOW: Don't go on the ice, fire service warns
10:03am Tuesday 22nd January 2013 in News
WILTSHIRE Fire Service has issued a warning to dog walkers not to let their pets onto frozen ponds, rivers and lakes.
Firefighters in other parts of the country have been called out to numerous rescues where pets have fallen through the ice.
Area Manager Jim Mahoney said: “Wintry conditions are great for sledding, but newly frozen water will not be thick enough to act as an ice rink.
“You can never be certain that the ice will be strong enough to carry the weight of an animal, let alone a person, so it is essential that you keep dogs on leads and make sure children are supervised.”
Anyone who sees someone go through the ice into freezing water is warned not to carry out a rescue themselves, but call 999.
