Cirencester's youngest ever town councillor Siobhan Brasier resigns
10:04am Friday 26th October 2012 in News By Laura Shack
CIRENCESTER’S youngest ever town councillor has reluctantly resigned after failing to juggle university studies and council responsibilities.
Siobhan Brasier was elected unopposed for the Stratton-Whiteway ward in April 2011, just four months after her 18th birthday.
After missing the last three full town council meetings, the Liberal Democrat member resigned from the role this month to focus on her Pyschology studies at the University of Wales in Cardiff, which she has lived since September.
Siobhan, a former Cirencester College student, said: “It’s upsetting that I’ve had to stand down. I really tried to be able to do both but it’s been difficult with the distance.”
Along with her work on the council, the 19-year-old has racked up a wealth of political experience, including representing the South West in the national Youth Parliament, which she has been a member of since the age of 15.
The town council is now planning to advertise the Stratton-Whiteway post to aspiring councillors.
