Emergency services at the Old Bell Hotel in Malmesbury.
Emergency services at the Old Bell Hotel in Malmesbury.

FIRE crews were called to the Old Bell Hotel in Gloucester Street, Malmesbury, today after a passer-by spotted flames erupting from one of the chimneys.

A fire engine from Malmesbury with a backup aerial tender from Swindon were called to the scene to deal with the fire which was within the chimney.

Malmesbury station manager Wayne Jones said: "We received a call from a member of the public who had spotted flames coming from the chimney of the Old Bell Hotel."

The fire did not appear to be serious he said but crews remained at the scene for some time as a precaution.

Police officers were also called to deal with passing traffic.
