Town hall renovation on track
THE race is on to finish the first two phases of the Malmesbury Town Hall revamp in time for mayor making in May.
The council offices are due to be completed by the end of this month, with the tourist information centre's stone floor to be laid in the first week of April.
Mayor John Lawton, who is leading the project board, said contractors Beam were under no illusions that they had to be finished by the second week in May because they had been invited to the ceremony in the third week, which will see Andrew Woodcock installed as the next mayor.
He said: "Things have slipped, but we are hoping that everything will come in on time."
Extra teams had been put on by the contractors to get the project back on target.
In the meantime business plans and tenders are being received from potential café tenants which were being reviewed and passed on to the policy and resources committee.
"It is looking likely that it will be a proper café, everyone bidding is experienced in café work. I think the future for that corner of the town hall is fairly secure," he said.
Another potential money-spinner would be a large exhibition and gallery space allowing artists to showcase their work and earning the town hall a commission for any sales.
Cllr John Bowen urged the council to consider the marketing of the town hall. "It is really important that it is done when the building is reopened in May."
Cllr Lawton criticised North Wiltshire District Council for neglecting the property during its 30-year tenure.
"If we had not taken over the building it would have been boarded up by now and developers would have been waiting for its roof to fall in," he said.
* The Market Room is in line for redecoration and an improved kitchen. The town council is to investigate possible grant funding and organise a painting party as a way of rewarding the pre-school for putting up with months of disruption. "They have stuck with us through thick and thin," said Cllr Lawton.
